Learning and Progress

At Royal Oak Intermediate, learning and progress sit at the heart of everything we do. We proudly teach across all eight areas of the New Zealand Curriculum, ensuring our ākonga experience a rich, balanced and engaging programme.

We believe that education extends beyond traditional teaching and learning. We take a holistic approach — nurturing growth, encouraging development, recognising achievement, broadening horizons, challenging perspectives, instilling strong values, and fostering creativity. We are committed to developing confident, capable young people who are prepared not only for secondary school, but for life.

Our teachers work within a collaborative house model. Each teacher takes responsibility for their class in English, Mathematics and Concept learning, as well as leading one specialist curriculum area — Science, Social Sciences, Te Reo Māori, or Physical Education and Health. Students rotate within their house to experience the other curriculum areas with different teachers.

This structure gives our students the best of both worlds. They build strong, consistent relationships with their home teacher while also benefiting from the strengths and passions of other teachers across a range of subjects. It allows us to provide both depth and expertise, while maintaining the strong pastoral care and connection that is so important during the intermediate years.

Through this approach, every learner is known, supported, and appropriately challenged to make meaningful progress across all areas of the curriculum.

Student Led Conferences

At Royal Oak Intermediate, we value student-led conferences as a way for students to take ownership of their learning. During these conferences, students share their achievements, reflect on their progress, and set goals for the future. This process helps build confidence, responsibility, and communication skills, while giving parents and caregivers a clear insight into their child’s learning journey. Student-led conferences are an important part of how we celebrate growth and learning at our school.

Reporting

At Royal Oak Intermediate, we provide two reports each year to keep you informed about your child’s progress. Reports highlight what your child can do, their assessment data, and how they are developing throughout the year. They offer a clear overview of achievements and milestones. They are emailed to whānau at the end of term 2 and term 4 via Etap. 

Daily life at Royal Oak Intermediate School

Each term, students attend four hours per week of Specialist classes (SPEC). Throughout the year, students rotate through the different specialist areas: Art, Food Technology, Design, and Music. This allows them to experience a range of creative and practical learning opportunities.

From Term 2 onwards, students also have the opportunity to join a cultural group. These groups work towards showcasing their learning and talents at our Fia Fia Night, which takes place at the beginning of Term 4. Students who are part of a cultural group will participate in practice sessions on Wednesday afternoons during Term 2, Term 3, and some weeks in Term 4.

On Thursday afternoons, students take part in Recreation Sport (Rec Sport). During the summer terms, students rotate through a range of different sports. In the cooler seasons, students have the opportunity to choose an elective sport or activity they would like to participate in.
