Gifted and  Talented – Academic Extension

At Royal Oak Intermediate there are also opportunities for students to take part in a range of academic competitions, including the Kiwi English, Mathematics and Science competitions facilitated by the University of Canterbury, as well as Tournament of Minds. These experiences encourage higher-order thinking, problem-solving, creativity and collaboration with like-minded peers.

Electives

In Terms 2 and 3, we run an Electives programme during Period 5 on Thursdays. Electives provide all students with the opportunity to learn a new skill in a fun, engaging and supportive environment.

Options vary from year to year based on staff strengths and student interest, and may include computer coding, football, rugby and netball academies, choir, kapa haka, watercolour painting, Trash to Fashion, photography, and a range of other creative and sporting opportunities.

Our electives programme allows students to explore passions, discover new interests, and build confidence outside of the core curriculum.

Enrichment Opportunities

In Terms 2, 3 and 4, our specialist technology teachers offer enrichment programmes in Food Technology, Music, Design Technology and Art. These classes are designed to extend students who have demonstrated particular interest, aptitude or talent during their regular technology rotations.

Students are selected by our specialist teachers, and parents and caregivers are contacted to seek permission for their child to participate. These programmes provide additional challenge, creativity and skill development in a focused, high-interest environment.

Cultural Groups

At ROI, we offer 11 cultural groups for students to choose from. These groups provide space to learn about different cultures, connect with others, and celebrate diversity in our school community. 

These groups are more than just extracurricular activities; they’re spaces where connections flourish across differences and cultural understanding becomes lived experiences. 

The highlight of our cultural calendar is Fiafia Night, an unforgettable evening where our students take to the stage to perform for whānau and the wider community. 

Tournament of Minds

Our school competes in the Tournament of Minds, where students collaborate to solve creative, open-ended challenges. This experience builds teamwork, critical thinking, and confidence. We are proud of how our students represent our school with creativity and enthusiasm.

AIM’s

Our students go to the AIMS sporting competition which is held in Tauranga each year; our top athletes are chosen through trials to represent our school at this event. This is a highly competitive event where students go up against some of the best in their age group and respective code.

Sports Camp

Sports Camp at Totara Springs Christian Camp in Matamata; this involves a week-long camp competing against 7 other schools in 30 different sporting codes.
